The men came down, leaning into the rain

That fell in back droplets from their coal-grimed faces.

Eyes rubbed clear by fists;

Giant pandas in negative;

They trudged on like the doomed species they were;

Black from the last shift to the tin-bath terraces that were home.

Defeated and subdued now after all the struggle,

Every man was lost in his own thoughts;

And yes, there was many a clean tear amongst the rivulets.
